Alice Becker Collier of Akron Ohio, formerly Venice Florida, passed away peacefully Thursday, December 7, 2017. She was the widow of Thomas Collier who preceded her in death in 2008.
Alice earned her B.A. degree in Music from Heidelberg University, Tiffin, Ohio, her M.A. in Education Administration from the University of Akron and post graduate studies at the Ohio State University. She taught music for several years and elementary classes in Ohio, California, Cuba, Germany and England. She returned to Akron Public Schools in administration where she founded the Early Identification Program, authoring two textbooks and a teacher's manual. After retiring from education, she was appointed Deputy Mayor for the City of Akron under Mayor Roy Ray. She also served on the National Advisory Council on Aging, during the Reagan Presidency, The Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital Foundation, Area Agency on Aging, Akron Civic Theater, Akron Regional Development Board, Akron Women's Network, University of Akron Personnel Committee and Summa Hospital Women's Professional Committee. Her involvement and honors bestowed in city, state and national organizations are recognized in "Who's Who in America". She was an avid golfer at Mission Valley Country Club in Venice Florida and a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Beth Alice Duigou of Akron, Ohio; nieces and nephews, Dorothy (Sis) and Evert Farmer, Christy and Mac McCown, Linda and Paul Hayes, Gene and JoAnn Wood, Arthur and Lynn Becker.
A special thank you to dear friend and caregiver Kathleen Wilson, who brought much joy, care and kindness to Alice and her daughter during Alice's decline into Alzheimer's this past year. Her daughter would also like to thank all of the staff at Maplewood at Cuyahoga Falls Senior Living Center, as well as Harbor Light Hospice for their devotion and support.
Inurnment will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Veterans Cemetery in Seville, Ohio. Memorial donations may be made in Alice's name to Harbor Light Hospice, 4531 Belmont Avenue, Youngstown, OH 44502 or Maplewood at Cuyahoga Falls Associates Fund, 190 W.
