Alice M. Hutson (nee Twigg), 78, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Hutson Sr.; son, Thomas E. Hutson Jr.; and her sister Carol Twigg Byrd. She is survived by her children, Jerri Sauter (Howard), Michael, Patrick (Pam), Kathleen Francis (John), Erin O'Neill (Kevin); her daughter-in-law, Carol Zodrow; her brother, Charles Twigg; sisters, Lillian Faught and Linda Basile; and nine grandchildren. The family especially wishes to thank Alice's niece, Stephanie Twigg Hosey, for the countless hours of care and comfort she provided to her Aunt for many years until her death.
Alice was born in Akron, May 27, 1935 and graduated from East High School, home of the Orientals. After having 6 children, Alice decided to pursue a college degree and graduated in less than four years with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from the University of Akron. She started teaching and coaching at Innes Middle School in 1970 and went on to complete two masters programs: Physical Education at Akron U and Guidance & Counseling at Kent State University. She finished her career as a Guidance Counselor at Goodrich Middle School retiring after 32 years of service in 2002.
She was active in several local organizations and served on the Board of the Akron Touchdown Club and as President of the St. Vincent-St. Mary Band Boosters. Always a strong democrat, she was heavily involved at a grass roots level in local politics and served many years as a precinct committeewoman and volunteer. A particularly memorable day for Alice was flying to Chappaqua, New York to meet Hillary Clinton and have Hillary sign a copy of her autobiography.
The family also wishes to express their gratitude and thanks to the staffs of Emeritus Assisted Living in Stow, Ohio and Crossroads Hospice for their services.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, June 29th at 10:00 am, Holy Family Catholic Church, 3179 Kent Road, Stow, Ohio 44224. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel)
