The Reverend Alvin H. Arnold passed away this last Saturday, May 15, 2010.
Born in Akron, Ohio in 1923, he led an active and fulfilling life. His childhood days were spent in and around Akron and its suburb, Copley. Upon graduation from Akron University, as World War II was raging, he joined the Army Air Corps. He received his training as a bombardier and ultimately attained the rank of Lieutenant. Subsequent to the war, he was called into the service of the Lord and shortly thereafter married his beloved Ruth. He attended Garret Seminary in Evanston, Illinois and was ordained a Methodist minister in 1948. His first church was in Malden, Illinois. From there he served at Mogadore, Perry and then Copley; all towns in the North East Ohio Conference. Upon retirement from the ministry, he and Ruth made their way to Scottsdale, Arizona, in the Valley of the Sun. Once there, they enjoyed many happy, golden years living alongside their loving extended family of the Riggles and Rauchs. Each summer Alvin and Ruth would return to Perry, Ohio to spend the warm summer months with their dear friends, the Kish family. Reverend Arnold continued his lifelong dedication to the church in Scottsdale as an active member of Scottsdale United Methodist in various roles including visitation minister. Among his numerous accomplishments was his membership with the Masons. He was initiated June 12, 1946, in Loyalty Lodge #645 Akron, Ohio, passed July 24, 1946 and raised a Master Mason on September 26, 1946. He became Plural Member of Camelback Daylight #75 on April 1, 1986 and Worshipful Master in 1991. He was presented with a Sixty Year Pin on May 2, 2006; one of only five ever given from the lodge. He was an accomplished athlete in the sports of baseball, softball, swimming, volleyball and golf.
He was a loving and caring father of three boys and a devoted husband for 54 years. He is to be interred next to Ruth and her parents, Colonel C.D. and Leva Riggle.
He is survived by his sister, Eileen Pearson and his brother, William; his three sons, Charles, James and Joseph; seven grandchildren and three great-children who all loved him dearly.
Funeral services will be held at Perry Methodist Church in Perry, Ohio, this Friday, May 21st, at 7 p.m., with visitation before the service beginning at 6 p.m. Interment services will be held the next day, Saturday, at Rose Hill Burial Park in Fairlawn, Ohio, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Perry Methodist Church.
