Anna Mae Shepler, age 94, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on December 26th after bravely fighting a prolonged battle with Parkinson’s Disease. She was born in Akron, OH on May 22nd, 1929 to parents David and Lillian Nelson and was a resident of Bath, OH.
Anna attended the University of Akron, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. During her career as a music teacher, she achieved her Master’s Degree in Education and was a guidance counselor for the Akron Public Schools.
Music was an essential part of her life. She played percussion both in high school and for the Akron Symphony.
Anna was not only an academic and musician, she was an athlete. Her love for tennis was demonstrated early in life and continued into her 70’s. Running five miles after a full day’s work was an integral part of her daily routine.
Preceded in death by her parents, she is survived by her daughters, Lori Leonti and Nadine Haskins, granddaughter Kristi Haskins, brother Jim Nelson, and Charles Bennett, who she referred to as the son she never had. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Anna will be laid to rest at 1:00 P.M. FRIDAY December 29th, 2023 Moore's Chapel Cemetery, 1605 N. Hametown Road, Akron, OH 44333. Immediately following the interment, the family will host a Celebration of Life beginning at 2:30 P.M. at the Akron Woman's City Club, 732 W. Exchange St. Akron, OH 44302.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation .
