Annabel (Ann) Griffith Moore, 89, was born on August 20, 1922 in Amboy, Illinois, the daughter of Leland Stanford and Jane Caldwell Griffith. She died early in the morning of July 27, 2012 in Akron, Ohio.
Ann graduated from Amboy High School in 1939 and went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Illinois, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1944. During this time she also attended Interlochen School of Music studying flute and piano, and CBS Radio's School of Broadcasting in Chicago, Ill. She joined the Theta sorority and remained active with them all her life, attending her last monthly Theta group luncheon two months before she died.
First Lieutenant John P. Moore (whom she met at age 11 when she gave him a clandestine ride in her father's Chrysler Air stream) and Ann were married in the West Point Chapel in New York on June 6, 1944. Thus began a whirlwind thirty years as she traveled the world, raised five children, and was the consummate Air Force wife of a pilot with a rising star. Ann was a member of the PEO, President of the Officer's Wives Club, an honorary member of the NCO wives club, and an accomplished equestrian. Col. Moore retired to Akron in the 70's.
Meanwhile, Ann read Simone deBeavoirs book, "The Second Sex" and reinvented herself, divorcing the colonel. She went back to college, and became a successful "million dollar club" real estate agent for Boebinger Realty, Smythe Cramer, and finally Marting Realty. She made puppets and wrote and performed puppet shows around the area. She grew bean sprouts and fashioned her own flowing wool capes and clothing. She was a force to be reckoned with. Annabel gave of herself completely and was a wonderful and devoted mother whose family always came first. She was a caring and loving person who believed in the inherent good in all people. The world is a better place because of her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Moore, and her son, Philip Neal Moore. She is survived by three sons, John (wife, Phulamu), Jeff (wife, Betty), and Pete; and one daughter, Laura; six granddaughters, Dashal, Adrianne, Beaky, Gentry, Brenda, and Dova; one grandson, Ty; two great-grand-children, Maggie and Oscar; and sister-in-law, Elly Griffith.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. MONDAY, August 20, 2012 at Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Akron, OH 44333. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Friends Service Committee.
