Anthony ``Tony' Gorant, 80, of Akron, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011 following a brief illness.
Tony was born in 1930 to Helen and Nicholas Gorant in Youngstown, Ohio. He served in the Ohio National Guard and as a sergeant in the Army during the Korean Conflict in 1952-53. He was a graduate of Youngstown State University in 1958.
Tony started work at the young age of nine setting pins in a bowling alley where he grew up in Youngstown and working other jobs through his teen years. In 1955, following his service in the Army, he began what became a 42-year career with Ohio Edison. While at Edison he worked into management positions that included the years 1965-1985 in Sandusky, Ohio serving as Division Manager, and culminated in his role back in Akron as Senior Vice President of Division Operations. Tony retired from Ohio Edison at age 65 in 1995. For the past 15 years Tony has served as Senior Vice President of Community Affairs for Akron General Medical Center where he has been a tireless advocate for healthcare and hospitals across the state.
Throughout his career Tony had a tireless sense of responsibility for his community and was deeply involved in volunteer initiatives, local government issues and community life. Some of his activities included: Life Trustee, Akron Regional Development Board; Trustee American Diabetes Association; Chairman, Akron Public Schools Business Advisory Council; Board member, Akron Symphony Orchestra; Past Chair and Member, Akron City Planning Commission; Past Chairman/Life Trustee, Salvation Army Advisory Board and many, many more.
Tony has been recognized numerous times for his civic and business service, recent awards include the Ohio Hospital Association's Meritorious Service Award 2007, and the United Way Distinguished Service Award 2005.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan ``Toby' Gorant; a daughter, Ellen and son-in-law, Forrest Lishewski in Toledo; son, Nick in Bowling Green, Ohio; five grandchildren, Blaize, Sam and Isabelle Lishewski, Claire and Sean Gorant; and sister, Georgia Stratakis of Baltimore, Md.
Calling hours will be Sunday, Sept. 4 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd. in Fairlawn, Ohio. A funeral service will be held Monday, at 10 a.m. at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S. Union St., Akron, OH 44304 followed by internment at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Market St. in Youngstown on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his name to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund, the Salvation Army, or, the Akron General Hospital Foundation.
