Audrey Marilyn (Barnes) Hinks , 91, of Bath Township, passed away on Good Friday, April 15, 2022, surrounded by her family. The daughter of the late Duane and Julia (Armstrong) Barnes, Audrey was born on August 12, 1930, in Akron, Ohio. She married William L. Hinks on June 29, 1951, in Akron.
Audrey is survived by her devoted husband Bill; children Alan (Vicki) Hinks of Whitehall, Michigan and Marilyn (Bob) Kuhar of Broomfield, Colorado; grandchildren Ben (Meg) and Sean Hinks, and Jillian (Robert) Stepp; and great-grandchildren Lyrick, Finn, and Laney Stepp.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, brother Jack Barnes, and grand-daughter Sydney Hinks.
Audrey spent much of her life in service as a Christian. After majoring in Social Services at Akron University, she became an active community and church volunteer. Among her many contributions, she mentored young girls and assisted foster children and families for Family Service and Community Contact in Akron; served as Secretary-Treasurer for Chapel of Hope ministry in Kenmore; and served as President of Good Neighbors - Copley, a group providing food, clothing, and other support for those in need. Audrey was a member of The Bath Church, United Church of Christ for over 60 years, where she taught Sunday School, founded their prayer chain, and participated in numerous groups and committees through the years. Having spent early years in Mississippi, she had a lifelong interest in racial equality and social justice concerns.
Audrey was a gifted artist with specialties in acrylic and watercolor painting as well as poetry. She showed her work at the annual Epiphany Arts Festival in Bath and took part in the Women’s Art League of Akron. She received numerous accolades including a “Best of Show” and her paintings are treasured by family, friends, and art collectors.
Audrey appreciated the beauty of nature and had the amazing ability of making everyone she met feel loved and special. She had a positive outlook on life and loved to laugh.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am Sunday April 24, 2022, in the historic chapel at The Bath Church, United Church of Christ 3890 West Bath Road, Akron, Ohio, the Rev. Dr. Cindy Parker officiating. A short visitation will begin at 10:30, with a luncheon at the Church to follow the service. Later, a private interment will take place at Moore’s Chapel Cemetery in Bath Township. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Ukrainian relief organization, including the American Red Cross www.redcross.org or UNICEF www.unicef.org.
