July 5, 1922 — February 24, 2015

Barbara M. Black was born on July 5th, 1922 and passed away on February 24th, 2015.

She graduated from the Akron City Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 and immediately enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant to serve her country in World War II. After her time in the service, she returned to Akron City Hospital to work in the emergency room and was soon put in charge of the nursing shift. In 1949 she took a leave of absence to raise her four children. In 1963 she returned to Akron City Hospital's School of Nursing as an instructor, teaching Maternity. In 1970 she was asked to start an infection control program as a nurse epidemiologist at Barberton Citizens Hospital. The program she designed became a CDC standard worldwide. Soon after the introduction of the infection control program, she implemented hemocult testing at BCH to detect colon cancer in its early stages. She retired from nursing in 1984 to spend time with her husband and together they made many wood crafts for two church youth groups as well as family and friends.

She is survived by children, Jean (Frank) Ramsey, James (Dorothy) Black, Barbara (Chris) Wagner and Tom Black; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and many other family members and friends.

Many thanks to Summa Hospice for the helpful care they provided to mom.
