Barry W. Brockenbrough , age 89, passed away on Thursday January 18th, 2024. He was born on December 11th, 1934 in Akron, OH to parents Wilson M. and Ethel M. Brockenbrough. Barry graduated from the University of Akron in 1956, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He went on to serve in the United States Army for four years, serving overseas in Paris, France, more specifically Fontainebleau, France, being honorably discharged at the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
After returning home from the Army, he began his professional career in banking, starting at Evans Savings Association. Through the years, the bank changed its name through mergers and acquisitions, going from Evans Savings, to American Bank of Commerce, to Centran Bank, then Society Bank. Finally, he transitioned from Society Bank to Key Bank, where he finished his career as a Senior Vice President in the Commercial Loan department.
It was while at Evans Savings that Barry was introduced to Carol J. Nuzum. The two began dating and were married on June 4th, 1966. The celebrated 57 years of marriage, and together raised their family: sons, Barry Scott Brockenbrough and Robert Todd Brockenbrough.
Barry enjoyed many sports, watching and/or playing, including golf, baseball, basketball, tennis, and especially football.
He was a loyal member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He also won the all- fraternity ping pong tournament at the University of Akron, winning the championship trophy.
He also had a passion for his Christian faith, being a devout member of The Chapel since 1972, where he also served as an usher for over 30 years.
More than anything though, he loved his family.
Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his wife, Carol J. Brockenbrough; sons, Barry S. Brockenbrough and Robert T. Brockenbrough.
Calling hours 2-5 P.M. SUNDAY January 21st, 2024 at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Road, Fairlawn, OH 44333. Barry will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Burial Park in a private ceremony. A Celebration of Barry’s Life will be held 11 A.M. WEDNESDAY January 24th at The Chapel, 135 Fir Hill Akron, OH 44304.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Chapel.
