Belle Elizabeth Mettler died peacefully at her home from cancer on November 6, 2009 at age 81.
Belle was born in Akron on December 25, 1927 and lived in Akron until her family moved to Bath Township in late 1940. She graduated from West High School in 1945. She attended the University of Southern California, Ohio State University and graduated with a B.A. in English from Miami University of Ohio in 1949. After working in Cincinnati and San Francisco, California, Belle joined one of the first luxury travel companies, Olson Travel Organization in Chicago in 1957. She compiled and edited their best-selling travel book, Aboard and Abroad and wrote the scripts for Harvey Olson's radio shows. She missed California and moved to a cottage in the beautiful, rustic Carmel Highlands in the early 1960s where Olson Travel continued as her largest client. She also edited books for Ansel Adams, Eugene Burdick and Bill Lederer. After returning to Akron in the early 1970s, Belle continued in publishing until she retired in the late 1980s. She loved to read, work in her beautiful rose garden and eat chocolate in any form.
Belle was predeceased by her parents, William Maurice and Margaret Elizabeth Young Mettler; her brothers, John Hotchkiss Mettler and William Maurice Mettler, Jr.; her sister, Margaret Ann Mettler Schnorf and her nephew, Lt. Charles Jeffrey Schnorf. She is survived by her sisters, Nancy Hotchkiss Mettler of Akron and Mary Alice Mettler of San Francisco, California; as well as thirteen nephews and nieces and eighteen grandnephews and grandnieces.
At Belle's request, no services will be held. Donations in her memory may be made to the Friends of the Akron Public Library or to Hospice of VNS or to a charity of your choice.
