Bennie James Phelps, 81, passed into eternal life on April 30, 2011.
Bennie was a gentle man of good humor who put others before himself. He lived his entire life in the Akron area and was a lifetime member of The Chapel in Akron. He excelled at football at Akron Central High School and Akron University. He later tried boxing, but he was too sensitive a man for competitive boxing. As a boy, he worked in his parents' restaurant Phelps' Restaurant. Later he worked for Goodyear Aircraft and at the Chrysler Twinsburg Stamping Plant for 32 years, where he accepted overtime to provide for his family and send his son to college. He regularly dispensed wisdom from his experience, and often it was sage advice. He was passionately devoted to his family, which was the source of his greatest joy.
Bennie was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Alice Phelps, and his sister, Judy. He is survived by his wife, Lois; his son, Michael Sarah; and his sister, Sandra Beauregard Paul; and numerous extended family members whom he dearly loved.
Funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at Grandview United Methodist Church, 2315 Phelps Ave., Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 44223, with The Rev. Sarah Phelps, Ben's daughter-in-law, officiating. Private committal at Chestnut Hill Memorial Park. Friends may call between 6 and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Billow FALLS Chapel, 1907 23rd St., Cuyahoga Falls.
