FAIRLAWN - Betty Gene (Hess) Kieffer was born December 8, 1924 in Akron, the daughter of Harry and Bly (Davis) Hess, and died August 31, 2015.
She was preceded in death by her precious husband, Carl; brother, Frank Hess; daughter-in-law, Maryellen Faga Kieffer; and niece, Sandra Ruble. She is survived by her devoted sons, Bruce and Mark; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; much-loved grandchildren, Laura and Andrew; faithful nieces and their husbands, Judith and John Ruehling and Kathie and Jay Regallis; her buddy since school days, Frank Waistell; and many other wonderful nieces, nephews and friends. Special thanks to her best friends and helpers, Shirley and Cliff Mathewson, Marilyn Firestone, Wendy Flaherty and Valerie Becker.
Betty graduated from Akron East High School and received her B.S. and M.A. degrees from Kent State University. She began her 31-year teaching career at Manchester High School and retired from Copley-Fairlawn High School. She loved teaching and working with her students. She spent many after-school hours in extra-curricular activities and preparing her students for local, state, and national competitions.
She and Carl were patriots who loved their country. They served as volunteers for many years with numerous organizations, including their favorites; Navy League, V.F.W., Fairlawn Resource Center, American Diabetes Association, and the Akron Aeros Baseball Team. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Phi, Rotary International of Portage Lakes and many other educational and community organizations.
Honoring Betty's wishes, there will be no memorial service or visiting hours. She will be interred at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
