Betty Sibley Watts Wetterau

Betty Sibley Watts Wetterau, 95, of Hudson, Ohio passed away peacefully March 14, 2018. She was born October 11, 1922 in Huntsville, Ohio to Margaret and Philip Sibley.
Betty was devoted to her family who cherished her kindness, generosity, and joyful spirit. Her nature was to be there for others, always generous with her time.
An accomplished athlete, Betty was inducted in 1962 into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of her competitive swimming achievements. She was a member of the Firestone Tire and Rubber swim team from 1937 until the mid-1940's, and during that time, she was chosen to the All American swim team. Betty set several state and national freestyle records, with one medley record set at the International Women's Championships in 1939 that was not broken until 1952.
Betty was a lifelong resident of the Akron area. After attending Penn Hall Junior College in Chambersburg, PA, Betty completed her bachelor's and later a master's degree at the University of Akron. She enjoyed a 32-year career as an educator, most of which was spent as a third grade teacher at Anne T. Case Elementary School. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, Junior League of Akron, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Akron Woman's City Club, and Tuesday Musical Association. Betty was passionate about her golf and bridge games and also enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, and the arts.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by husbands, Sidney H. Watts and John R. Wetterau; siblings, Phyllis (Robert) Linder; James (Pegge) Sibley; and, great-grandson, Charles Jay Smith.
Betty will be greatly missed by her loving family, daughters Susan Watts (Gregory Smith) of Silver Spring, MD and Margaret Watts Hunter (David) of Silver Lake, OH; stepchildren Norman Wetterau (Nancy) of Danville, NY; Margaret Down of Medford, NJ; Christine Reale of Pickerington, OH; and, John Wetterau (Penny) of Indianapolis, IN; beloved grandchildren and their families: David Smith-Watts (Barbara Gutierrez), Marie Sibley Hunter (Omar Ortiz), Helen Hunter (Michael DePaul), Kristina Iturralde (Vincent), Gregory Wetterau (Janeen), Julie Bauer (Jeffrey), Laura Waits (Tucker), Andrew Reale (Ashley), Brian Reale, Jane Wetterau (Mike Spinnicchia), and, Michael Wetterau; sixteen adored great-grandchildren; dear nieces and nephews; and, a host of friends.
The family wishes to thank the compassionate staff of Laurel Lake Retirement Community for 17 years of kindness and support. The quality of loving care Mom received in her final days by those in Crown Center and Summa Health Hospice will always be gratefully remembered by her daughters.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Betty's life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7 in the Serenity Chapel, Crown Center at Laurel Lake Retirement Community.
