Carolyn J. Von Wyl died on Sunday, November 27th, after a nearly three year battle with numerous health issues. Her entire family is extremely proud of the courageous battle she fought, and in typical "mom-style", she did it with her usual class and grace.
Mrs. Von Wyl was born in Canton on June 8th, 1936, and was the daughter of the late Leo James and May O'Connor. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Harold Von Wyl, DDS only four weeks earlier. She leaves behind her children, son Hal, Jr. and his wife Kathy, of Shawnee, KS along with granddaughter, Kara, and grandson, Eric; son Jimmy and his wife Christine, of Greenville, SC along with grandsons Cullen, Reid, and Ryan; a sister Kathleen (Bud) Brauchler of Canton, and sisters-in-law Marilyn Renner of Cincinnati, and Kathryn (Kay) O'Connor of Canton. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Leo James O'Connor, Jr.
Carolyn grew up in the Lake Cable neighborhood of Canton, where she attended Jackson High School. She attended Barry University in Miami, Fl where she earned a Bachelors Degree. She taught grade school in both the San Francisco area and Canton after graduation, and eventually married Harold Von Wyl, who would go on to graduate from Oral Surgery School at Ohio State. They were married in 1959 in Canton and his education and residency took them from Columbus, to New Orleans and back, before they settled back in the Akron-Canton area in 1968, when Harold joined Akron Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Group, Inc.
Along with raising her sons, Mrs. Von Wyl was very active in the community. She spent many years volunteering for local organizations like the Akron General Hospital Women's Board, the Walsh Jesuit High School Mothers Club, St. Hilary Catholic School, Blossom Music Center, and was a sustaining member of the Akron Junior League. She was a member of Portage Country Club and St. Sebastian Catholic Church.
In typical O'Connor fashion, mom loved a great party, and her biggest joys were when hosting family or friends for a wonderful meal or celebration. "Grandma" was kind and generous to all she met, and was fortunate to have a special circle of friends. It was with those friends that many great football weekends at Ohio State, Notre Dame and Auburn were shared, along with travel and fun new culinary experiences. She wanted her family to enjoy all that life has to offer, and appreciate and share it, yet she was very grounded in her love of her faith. We'll all miss you mom!!
