Catharine Allison Andrews (Katy) was born in Akron on February 9, 1928, and died at home on March 30, 2012. After attending Buchtel High School she graduated from Old Trail School in 1945. She earned her bachelor's degree in chemistry at Smith College in 1949 and married James P. Andrews, M.D., in 1950.
A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she was the center of her family life. From 1953 to 1966, during her husband's education and early career, she lived in Durham, N.C., Hudson, Ohio, Lexington, Ky., Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach, Fla., where she raised her young children. The family returned to Akron in 1966 when her husband, a pathologist, joined the medical staff of Akron General Hospital. She was active throughout her life in women's community organizations, including the Medical Society Auxiliary and Junior League. She was particularly committed to educational causes and volunteered in the schools, as well as serving as a fundraiser for the Smith College Scholarship Fund. She also took delight in gardening and was for many years a member of the Junior League Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Lloyd Allison and Frances McGovern Allison; her sister-in-law, Marilyn Johanning Allison; and niece Joan Allison. She is survived by her husband of sixty-one years, James P. Andrews, M.D., of Akron; brother, George Lloyd Allison, Jr. (Sandra N. Colbert) of Solon; son, James H. Andrews of Corte Madera, Calif.; daughters, Susan A. Baughman (Timothy) of Akron, Julia F. Andrews-Shen (Kuiyi Shen) of Upper Arlington, and Marian Catharine Andrews (Myles McDonough) of Bedford, Mass.; grandsons, James E. "Ted" Han (Carolyn Rupar-Han) of Columbia, Mo., Alexander A. Han and Andrew M. Han of Upper Arlington; stepgrandchildren, Sarah King (Gerald) of Cleveland, Robert and Jason Baughman of Akron, and Sophia Shen of Columbus; and nephew, Mark Allison (Beth) of Solon.
Memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 9th in the Chapel of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1361 W. Market St., Akron 44313 (corner of W. Market St. and Kenilworth Dr.), with Rev. Edward Perkinson officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Ataxia Foundation, Planned Parenthood, Musical Arts Association (Tuesday Musical), and Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank.
