Catherine (Katie) Fygetakis

October 25, 1928 — April 28, 2015

Catherine "Katie" Fygetakis, 86, died on April 28, 2015 after facing cancer head-on since 2007 with her well-known brand of strength, spirit, determination, sharp wit and humor.

Born in Akron, OH on October 25, 1928, she was the daughter of Chris and Helen (Tsitsi) Economou. Katie's parents returned to their home in Thessaloniki, Greece when she was three years old. Early on, she discovered her love for classical music and the piano. She studied and was awarded a degree in music theory and piano performance from Thessaloniki's Conservatory of Music. She returned to Akron where she met and married her beloved, "Mihali," in 1955, sharing a wonderful life together with a large extended family from both sides who had immigrated and life-long friends. Her final years were spent with family in Newton, MA.

Katie was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Akron and the Falls Music Club. She had many piano students and regularly gave piano performances of classical pieces and those written by Greek composers. She delighted her audiences along the way, by educating them about the historical background, music theory, and composer information of what she played.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Michael in 2001. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Leah of Boston, MA and Elaine of Tallahassee, FL; grandchildren: Michael, Nicholas and James; brother Anthony Economou of Akron and sister Marika Papadopoulos of Thessaloniki; numerous other family members.

Services will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S. Union St., Akron on Monday, May 4, 2015 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. FR. Jerry Hall officiating, friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park.
