Charles E. Booth

July 25, 1922 — August 1, 2013

Charles E. Booth, 91, died August 1, 2013.

Born July 25, 1922 in Akron to Emily Sarah Norton and Albert Edward Booth, he was
educated in the Akron public schools, graduated from Central High School and University of Akron. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Akron in 1981. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, he served in Europe and in the occupation forces in Japan during World War II.

He started his career as a bank teller for the Bank of Akron, working there through many mergers and purchases. Eventually he became president of BancOhio and retired in 1987 as Vice President and Head of Corporate Banking for National City Bank.

Giving back to the community was one of the cornerstones of his life and a lesson he taught his children, not just with words, but with deeds. So many organizations benefited from his service over the years, but there are too many to enumerate. Chief among them were United Way of Summit County (Campaign Chair 1973), Downtown Kiwanis Club of Akron, University of Akron Alumni Association, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Akron Community Foundation, and the Greater Akron Canton Area Agency on Aging Foundation. He became a 33rd Degree Mason in 2000 and was a Polsky Humanitarian Award winner in 2003. He stayed active in the community until 3 years before his death.

Another cornerstone of his life was his family: wife of 66 years, Mary Kathryn Wilson Booth; children, Martha, Kathryn, Patricia Benchea, Susan (Michael) Pallini, Joan (Kurt
Weitendorf), Chip (Vicki); grandchildren, Matthew (Lauren) Pallini, Laura and Julie Benchea, Brian, Tyler, Spencer, and Sydney Booth. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, John Benchea
