Life-long Akron-area resident, Clair B. Alexander, Jr. died Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at the age of 89 after a long illness.
A devoted family man, Clair is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ann Noyes Alexander; children, Susan Alexander Rigby (James Rigby), Kenneth Alexander (Katherine Pica), John Alexander and Karen Alexander; grandfather to Wayne and Daniel Rigby (Kelly Duarte); and great-grandfather to Lydia and Ashton Rigby.
Clair became a pilot at the age of 17 and flew B-24 bombers with the 461st Bomb Group in Italy during World War II where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters. He was an avid pilot in the Soaring Thunderbirds glider club in Wadsworth. He graduated from Akron Buchtel HS in 1942 and the University of Akron with B.S. degrees in mechanical and aeronautical engineering in 1950. Clair was very active in the community and supporter of classical music and the arts.
A memorial will be held for Clair in January with the details to be published at a later date. Clair's kindness and sense of humor will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
