Daniel L. Bell, 54, passed away peacefully January 28, 2018 from ocular melanoma, surrounded by his dearest loved ones.
Dan was born in California and moved to Cuyahoga Falls at age 12. He was a 1981 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School and attended Kent State University before transferring to The University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a Psychology Degree. He then returned to Ohio, attending The University of Akron receiving a Master's Degree in Personnel Psychology. He continued on to The University of Akron School of Law, where he graduated summa cum laude. Focusing his nearly 30-year career on Labor and Employment Law, he practiced at Dinsmore & Shohl (Cincinnati), Jones Day (Pittsburgh), and Brouse McDowell (Akron). At the time of his passing, he was in the most fulfilling place of his career, serving as Associate General Counsel at Akron Children's Hospital and also maintaining a private practice.
Dan was active in the local community, serving as Chair of the Board of Trustees for Summit County Children's Services, a graduate of Leadership Akron (Class XX), former President of the Walsh Jesuit Booster Club, lifetime member of the Texas Exes Alumni, and booster of the Black Tiger Gridiron Club.
Dan met his wife Mary (Hockwalt) in 1988. Dan was quickly welcomed into the Hockwalt family, and loved as a son by Mary's parents, Jean and Phil, and as a big brother to Beth and Dianne. Dan and Mary married in 1991, moving to Pittsburgh soon after. In 1994, they welcomed daughter McKenzie. After 5 years, they realized Akron was truly home and returned in 1996, where their son Philip was born. Dan's family was the focus of his life, and we will miss him dearly. They enjoyed many family vacations - skiing in Colorado, cruising the British Virgin Islands, and exploring the Mayan Cenotes in Mexico. Christmas 2017 in Cancun will be fondly remembered as their final family vacation.
Dan was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Michael Calhoun, and his father-in-law, Phil Hockwalt. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, McKenzie (24) and son, Philip (20); mother-in-law, Jean Hockwalt; sister-in-law, Beth and her husband, Erich Leipold and their children, Olivia Calhoun, Jacob Calhoun and Thomas Leipold; sister-in-law, Dianne and her husband, Fred Teceno and their children, Delaney, Callahan and Bennett. He also is survived by his parents, Daniel and Sandra Bell; and sister, Robin (Mike) Wolfe, all of Las Vegas. Dan leaves behind many, many dear friends and family who have provided much love and support during his illness for which the family is forever grateful.
