Daniel Guyer Demaree

May 24, 1954 — June 5, 2024

Daniel Guyer Demaree , 70, entered God’s kingdom on June 5, 2024 after a dance with Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harry and Mary (Middleton), and his sister Kathleen and her husband, Maurice Lawrence (Mike) Jr. Adams. He is survived by his nephews, Roy and Nathan, and Nathan’s wife, Natalie (Briganti). Other survivors include nephew in-laws Maury and Michael Adams and their wives, Shida (Yazdizad) and Terri (Tran), and their children, Ariana, and Maurice (aka: Momo).

Dan graduated from Stow High School in 1972 and was the sports editor of the student newspaper during his junior and senior years. Words of encouragement from his high school journalism teacher, Mrs. Ruby Hutchinson, spurred him on to a 30-year career in sports journalism after graduating from Kent State University in 1976. His career included stints on the sports desks of six daily newspapers: the Ashtabula Star-Beacon, the Syracuse Post-Standard, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Dallas Times Herald, the Memphis Commercial Appeal, and the Columbus Dispatch.

Some of Dan’s happiest moments in life were spent playing golf with friends, especially members of the Wetmore Street Gang and high school buddies often involved in the Gula-McClintick-Martin Classic each August. One of his favorite quotes came from a Bob Greene column written about the death of former Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes. Greene, a columnist for the Chicago Tribune at the time, said Woody couldn’t remember who made the statement, possibly some old Greek poet, but it struck a chord with him, and he recited it to Greene: “‘And in the night of death, hope sees a star, and listening love hears the rustle of a wing.’” Dan was comforted in his final days by the loving support of his family and friends, his belief in God Almighty, and in the promise of Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior.
