Daniel was born in Akron on October 5, 1925 to Maude and Daniel Frances Mathias, MD. He was an only child. After graduating from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1943, he was an Ensign in the U.S. Navy until 1945 when he transferred into the U.S. Naval Reserves. He attended Williams College and then entered medical school early at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. Dan met his wife Mary Alice, while she was attending art school. They were married on May 15, 1948 in Akron, Ohio. He went on to Ophthalmology Residency after medical school at the Harkness Eye Institute at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. His training was interrupted by a two year tour of duty in the Air Force beginning in October of 1950 as a First Lieutenant.
After residency training, Dan returned to Akron in 1954 to join his father Daniel F. Mathias, MD in private practice and lived in West Akron until recently. Dan was the first ophthalmologist specialist in Akron, where he promptly began an ophthalmology training program at Akron City Hospital. Dan was head of the residency program until 1990 when he retired as chief to enjoy his private practice. He finally retired at the age of 76 years in 2001 when he switched his attention to his miniature model trains.
He served as President of the Akron Medical Society, Akron Lion's Club, Vice President of the Medical Service Bureau and served as Chief of Staff of Akron City Hospital. He served as a consultant for both the police and fire departments in the City of Akron. He also was an avid supporter of local art and the Akron Art Museum.
Dan loved life and enjoyed it when he could with his wife and friends. He had infamous croquet and steak parties for his residents every year. In Dan's spare time, he loved to go to the cottage in Treasure Lake Pennsylvania where he would enjoy long walks through the woods with his wife and the dogs, as well as fishing and boating. Dan was a long term member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church since 1954.
