Darlene DeYoung died on July 24, 2015, with her family by her side.
Darlene was born in Akron, Ohio on July 1, 1940; she was the daughter of the late Bette and Harry Froelich. She leaves her beloved husband, Bruce Russell DeYoung, after a wonderful 55 years of marriage; two daughters: Laura DeYoung and fiancé, Michael Minnig and Wendy DeYoung Susi and husband, Anthony Susi; five grandchildren, who lovingly called her Mimi: Ashley, Christian, Chandler, Taylor and Erika; she also leaves her uncles: Roger (Lois) Froelich and Vern (Glenna) Froelich; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: James and Janet Mungo and Ralph and Judy DeYoung.
Darlene, known to her friends as Dolly, was a member of Akron Junior League and served on the Women's Board of Akron Children's Hospital for many years. She was the first president of the Women's Board of Akron Children's Zoo. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and a member of Portage Country Club. She was also a member at Turkey Foot Island Club.
Darlene grew up as an only child and graduated from Buchtel High School and attended Akron University where she met her husband. She lived in Florida for a few years and spent her days sailing and shopping. She returned to Ohio when she got her cat, Lovey. Darlene was a beautiful and loving mother and grandmother. She always put her family first and loved to be surrounded by them. Traveling was a passion; Darlene had a great opportunity to see the world with her husband and two daughters. The whole family has memories of her humorous comments and actions. Darlene lit up every room she walked into and she was always the life of the party.
A celebration of her life will be held at a Memorial Service on Thursday, July 30th, 11 AM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1250 W. Exchange St., with visitation one hour prior to the service. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be private. Donations may be made to the Memorial Research Women's Board of Summa Hospital or your favorite charity.
