David L. Flanders

David L. Flanders, age 97, passed away November 18, 2012 in Akron.

David was born September 5, 1915 in Battle Creek (Calhoun Co.), Michigan to Oscar H. and Hazel D. Frey Flanders. On May 9, 1942, in Akron, he married Mary E. Frederick, who survives.

David was a graduate of Battle Creek High School where he was a member of the swim team. He was member of the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

David was a 1937 graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was an employee of the B.F. Goodrich Co. in Akron, retiring in 1981 with 44 years of service in the chemical and purchasing departments. He completed a Masters Degree in Business Administration at the University of Akron and attended Sloan School of Business at MIT.

David is also survived by three daughters, Julianne (Bruce) Kennedy of Van Wert, Ohio, Marybeth (Michael) Lauber of Boston, Massachusetts, and Karen (Steve) Schweizer of Ft. Myers, Florida; and a granddaughter, Hannah F. Lauber of Washington, D.C.

David was an active member of The First Congregational Church of Akron, where he served on the Board of Deacons, was a trustee, and led the loyalty campaign. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the American Chemical Society, and served on the Akron Advisory Council on Alcoholism. He was a founding member of Fairlawn Swim and Tennis Club. David was an established amateur radio operator since 1936, enjoyed playing tennis and golf, was an accomplished photographer, and loved world travel with his wife and family.

David was a commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve from 1937-1943.

Memorial services will be held at a future date at The First Congregational Church of Akron, 292 East Market Street. Private burial will be in Copley Township Cemetery, Copley, Ohio.
