David E. ``Gene' Waddell, 82, died peacefully November 18 in La Quinta, California with his beloved wife at his side.
Gene and Barbara recently celebrated 49 years of marriage, having two 2 children, Diane Bauer Andrew and David Waddell Charlotte; three precious granddaughters, Rachael Louise Bauer, Allyson Paige Waddell, and Reagan Grace Waddell. He is also survived by his sister, Dorthea Jones Wilford; niece, Deborah Looper Dennis; great-nieces, Jennifer Richmond, Tiffany Sherrill and Jessica Marshall; and many cherished friends. We miss him so much.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David A. and Merle Waddell.
Gene attended Leggett Elementary, Firestone Park, and graduated from Garfield High School in 1946. Following his service as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Police 1953-55, Gene graduated from the University of Akron and received his LLB from Western Reserve Law School in 1960. The Board of Governors of the Ohio State Bar Association recently recognized David E. Waddell in honor of having completed 50 Years of Service as an attorney and counselor of law since 1960. He was a member of the Akron Bar Association, Ohio Bar Association, the American Bar Association and has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. He was Special Counsel to the Attorney General of the State of Ohio 1994-2002, and was the Law Director of the City of Fairlawn, Ohio under Mayor Bill Roth 1996-2000.
Gene served as State Chairman of the Ohio League of Young Republicans 1960-1961 and was Chairman of the Summit County Republican Executive Committee from 1965 to 1978. He was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions many times.
From 1993-2002 Gene was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The University of Akron serving on the Board of Trustees and elected Chairman in 2001. He received the doctorate of Humane Letters in 2002 from The University of Akron and the title of Trustee Emeritus. He received the Alumni Honor Award and belonged to Phi Kappa Tau, Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa.
Gene also served on the Board of Trustees of the Akron-Canton Regional Airport Authority for 21 years 1978-2000 and served as Chairman of the Board four times. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Falls Savings and Loan 1982-1995 and Fifth Third Bank Board of Directors for Northeastern Ohio 1995-1998, Akron Regional Development Board, Chairman of the Canton Regional Board of Industrial Commission of Ohio 1991-1994 and belonged to Akron Homebuilders Association, Bluecoats of Akron and many other organizations.
Gene was proud to be on the Board of Governors for President Ronald Reagan Ranch 2002-2010 in Santa Barbara, Calif. He graduated from the FBI Citizens Academy in 2006, was appointed an honorary Sheriff's Deputy and was awarded the Summit County Sheriff's Eagle for being an outstanding citizen by Sheriff Drew Alexander. Gene was a member of The Chapel in Akron, past leader of the Prime Time Class and Associate Member of the Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church in California. Gene loved to golf and was a member of Sharon Golf Club, Portage Country Club of Akron, The Citrus Club and La Quinta Mountain Course in La Quinta, California.
Friends may call at the Billow Fairlawn Chapel, 85 North Miller Road, Fairlawn, on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. A memorial service will be conducted by Pastor Lynn Warner in the Memorial Chapel at The Chapel on Tuesday, November 30 at 7 p.m. There will be a private graveside service.
