The Reverend Father Dennis (Dionysios) Michelis fell asleep in the Lord on August 9, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 90 years old. Father Dennis was born on August 4, 1927 in Patras, Greece and was the son of the late Peter and Marigo Michelis.
Protopresbyter Dennis graduated from Holy Cross Seminary in Brookline Massachusetts and married his loving wife Mary on November 12, 1950. After his ordination he entered his first parish which was St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In September of 1955 he became the pastor of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Warren, Ohio where he led his parish with great dedication, strength and faith in God for forty-eight consecutive years.
During his tenure Father Dennis wrote several books on religion, one of which today is in the Vatican and Washington. He was a literate scholar earning a Master's Degree in Divinity from Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio. He married and baptized hundreds of parishioners. He led with gentle humility respecting every person for who they were.
Father's passions included history, reading, classical music, traveling, hiking and camping.
After retirement he served as an assistant priest at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Rocky River, Ohio.
He was an extremely devoted husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his loving wife of 67 years; his daughter, Lee(Peter)Anestis of York, Maine; son, Peter Michelis of North Canton, Ohio; and grandson, Peter Anestis of Portland, Maine.
Services were held August 14, 2017 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Akron, Ohio. Interment at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cemetery in Dover, New Hampshire. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 429 High Street NE, Warren, OH 44481.
Father Dennis will be deeply missed.
