Don W. McCoy, M.D., died April 6, 2010.
Born in Canton, Don McCoy served as a Lt. jg on a destroyer in the Navy during World War II, seeing action in the Pacific. Don graduated from Kenyon College in 1947 and received his M.D. from New York Medical College in 1951. Throughout his 55 years as a physician, Dr. McCoy focused on serving Akron families. Setting up private practice in 1953, he went on to help found the family practice residency program at Akron General Medical Center, served on the staff at Children's Hospital, and was on the Boards of Trustees at Edwin Shaw Hospital, the Medical Round Table, the Child Guidance Center, and the State and Summit County American Academy of Family Practice.
In addition to his practice, he taught family medicine at Northeastern Ohio's College of Medicine from 1978-2005. He was elected to the Distinguished Physicians Society at A.G.M.C.
Dr. McCoy, one of the almost vanished breed of physicians who made house calls, brought thousands of Akron area babies into the world. As he lay in the hospital Tuesday night, a hospital staff person volunteered that Dr. McCoy had delivered her 42 years ago. He retired from medicine at age 80 in 2005.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marylou; his brother, Jason Janet; four children, Tom of California, Sue Ron of Kansas, Dan Linda of Akron, Kitti Paul of Idaho; grandchildren, Benjamin, Llorin, Austin and Brennan; great-grandchildren, Kaden and Lexi.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. SATURDAY at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Akron General Medical Center.
