Doris Lorain Jones

Doris Lorain Jones nee Lancaster, of Cuyahoga Falls, passed on to Heaven February 20, 2011. She had suffered a stroke in September 2010 from which she never fully recovered.

Doris was born in Frostburg, Maryland on May 13, 1924, and moved to Akron with her family as a young teenager. After graduating from the University of Akron with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, she worked as a Lab Technologist at Akron General Medical Center. In 1947, Doris married John A. Jones, who still resides in their home. They raised three children, all still living: Lyn Jack Dean of South Carolina, Ben Marilyn Jones of Oregon, and Lorain Jones Zender of Cuyahoga Falls. Doris and John have four grandchildren, Benjamin Zender, Tiffany Zender, Isaac Jones and Saul Jones.

Doris has volunteered in many ways over the years including the Crib Room at Church, PTA's, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, The Red Cross, and last but not least, The Akron Zoo which she loved. She was an early environmentalist and did not hesitate to write letters to politicians and newspapers in support of her causes. Doris loved her family and friends and enjoyed celebrating holidays with them and especially loved fireworks. She taught her children many ways to enjoy the outdoors, take care of each other, and be respectful of the Earth and its' inhabitants. She spent many hours in the yard creating rock walls and walks, planting trees and flowers, gardening and creating a habitat for nature. Doris loved traveling, hiking, whale watching and dreamed of a blimp ride. The MetroParks Overlook Trail was one of her favorites in recent years.

A memorial celebration of Doris' life will be held 2 p.m. SATURDAY, February 26th, at the First United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls, 245 Portage Trail, with Rev. David A. Baker officiating.
