Dorothy J. "June" (nee Frank) Rhoad, age 91, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2014.
Born on January 24, 1923, she grew up in Akron in a household where good books and good music were ever present. At seventeen, she entered Heidelberg college where she met her husband-to-be, Milton J. Rhoad, in the Concert Choir. She graduated with honors in 1944 and she and Milton married the following year.
In 1962, Goodyear sent her husband to France. The family gathered up their two young daughters and their dachshund and moved to the Paris suburb of Le Vesinet where they lived the next three years before returning to Akron. June and Milton loved France and often returned there in later years.
She moved once again when her husband became Managing Director of the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers, an organization headquartered in Houston, with nineteen member countries. She traveled the world with her husband as required by the institute position and took responsibility for planning an supervising the spouse's program at annual meetings held in North America, South America, Europe and the Far East. After six years in Houston she and Milton returned home to Akron.
For more than fifty years, she was a member of Bath Church where she served on the Diaconate and was a long-term member of Fidelis Guild and the Wednesday Morning Bible Study group. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she inherited a love of music and poetry from her mother and took great pleasure in learning new languages, playing the piano, travel, books, and birdwatching.
Preceded in death by son Paul, she is survived by her husband, Milton; daughter Leslie Lam (Tony) of Toronto, Ontario, daughter Julie Rhoad of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren: Torrey Lam, Tiffani Lam, and Toby Lam, his wife Lis and their daughter, June's great-grandchild, Ellora Lam.
Arrangements to celebrate her life with a memorial service at Bath Church will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bath Church 3980 West Bath Rd.
