Douglas M. Evans

July 31, 1925 — February 4, 2013

Dr. Douglas M. Evans, 87, of Akron, passed away February 4, 2013 with his beloved wife and children at his side.

Born in Vandergrift, Pa., Doug was preceded in death by siblings, Archibald and Miriam. Doug is survived by his wife, Terry; sons, Matthew (Ellen) and Daniel (Isabelle); grandchildren, Mitchell, Maxwell, Marie and Paul.

After serving his nation in World War II, Doug earned his Medical Degree from Western Reserve and interned at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit where he met his wife to be Thelma Jean (Terry) Volkers. They soon married and moved to Akron, Ohio where Doug started his surgery practice. He finished his career as Chief of Surgery and researcher at Akron General Medical Center. His achievements are measured in the number of lives he helped save and families he touched.

Doug was a surgeon, researcher, teacher and colleague. He was also was an avid reader, world traveler, lover of fine wines, water skier, button pusher, joke teller and avid golfer who, no matter how hard he tried, could not rid himself of his left hook off the tee box.

To friends and family, he will always be remembered as simply a great and loving person. "Follow your dreams, always do the best you can, and you will always be happy" was Doug's philosophy and advice which he followed until the day he left us.

So now, instead of tears, let's all give cheers as we raise our glasses and tip our hats to this man who touched so many lives in his own special way. Doug, you will always be loved.

At Doug's request, private family services will be held. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or the charity of your choice.
