Dr. Sneh Raj, M.D., age 91, passed away peacefully at home with her loving family while listening to the recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa.
Preceded in death by her husband, Hari Raj; parents, Justice S.D. & Chandrawati Singh; in-laws, Sriram Mathur & Chandrani Mathur; siblings, Kusum Bhatnagar, Hem Bhatnagar, Vishnu D. Singh and Dr. Dinesh D. Singh. She is survived by her brother, Omesh D. Singh (Manju), sister-in-law’s Vandana Singh and Savita Bahadur, daughter, Madhulika Raj (Patrick J. Lydon), son, Manav H. Raj (Susan C. Martell), and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews in the United States, Canada and India.
Born in Meerut, India, Dr. Raj was a resident of Munroe Falls most of her adult life. She was a graduate of St. George Medical School in Lucknow, India. After practicing as an OB/GYN in Mumbai, India, she and her late husband, Hari Raj, relocated to Akron in 1974 where she continued her medical career as a clinical Psychiatrist until her retirement in 2007. Dr. Raj worked at Massillon and Fallsview State Psychiatric Hospitals for 25 years while maintaining a private practice in Akron specializing in eating disorders and geriatric psychiatry.
While medicine was her profession, promoting and preserving her Indian heritage was her passion. Amongst others, Dr. Raj founded the India Sunday School of Greater Akron in her 2 bedroom apartment in 1976 and continued to relish in the cultural education of young Indian-American’s for the next 45 years. Her incredible resilience to create a bright future for her children and those in the community, was evident through these efforts.
Sneh was considered a pillar in the community and lovingly seen as a friend, sister, and mother to all. After retirement, she continued her service to others by sharing her mental health experience by counseling and advising friends. She was also a lifetime lover of classical Indian music, literature, and gardening who loved knitting and generously gave hand-made gifts to infants, adults, and charity. Sneh not only enjoyed playing cards, she relished winning and was a formidable player.
Her family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until Noon, on Friday, June 24, 2022, with services and cremation to immediately follow at 12:00 PM at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Road, Akron, OH 44333.
Dr. Raj’s nephew started a school for the education and promotion of underprivileged children in the Barani District of Madhya Pradesh, India. For years, Dr. Raj has financially supported this school promoting its success. Dhooli & Manav have created a Foundation to further their parent’s commitment to education and helping those in need. This Foundation will fund the construction of a permanent school building at the Adharshila Learning Centre for these children.
