Edna Jeannette Murie White, 86, died at the Hospice Care Center on Ridgewood on November 15, 2008.

She was born February 8, 1922 in Mt. Pleasant Ohio, the eldest of five children born to Louis O. Murie and Ruth Berry Murie. She was raised as a member of the Mt. Pleasant Friends Church. The Quaker faith always guided the conduct of her life. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1940. In the fall of 1940, she entered Ohio University on a scholarship. In May of 1941, her roommate who was engaged to the pledge master of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, arranged a date for her with Harold F. White whom she subsequently married in 1943. They have shared a happy marriage for 65 years. Her education was interrupted by World War II. During the war she worked at Wright Patterson Field until the time of her marriage. After the war she dedicated herself to the raising of her three children. During that time she served as a Girl Scout leader and president of the Findley PTA. She returned to school in 1961 attending The University of Akron. In 1964 she graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and with certifications in Biology, English and Business Education. After graduation she taught accounting and business education at East High School for 19 years. While there she also served as school treasurer. Upon retiring she spent the next 15 years being involved with the Hower House Victorians, where her chief interest was in the conservation and restoration of Hower House. She also was a member of the Akron Association of Ohio University Women, the Women's Committee of the University of Akron, Friends of Hower House, Akron Woman's City Club and the Westminster Presbyterian Women. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. In 2005 she was made an honorary alumna of the Law School of The University of Akron. In October of this year, she was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by The University of Akron.

She is survived by her husband, Judge Harold F. White; her children, Attorney Frances M. James of Akron, Dr. Susan J. Braunstein and son-in-law, Dr. Ethan M. Braunstein of Arizona, and Dr. Harold A. White of Akron; grandchildren, Andrew P., Wm. Ethan and James H.R. White, all of Akron; siblings, Richard A. Murie, PhD of Arkansas, Louis L. Murie Dorothy of Stow and the Rev. Kenneth W. Murie Donna of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; brother-in-law, Ronald Leafgren of Akron; sister-in-law, Renee Strainge of Connecticut; as well as many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her sister, Laura M. Leafgren RN and son-in-law, William C. James.

Calling hours will be at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Tuesday, November 18th, between the hours of 1 to 3 p.m. as well as 5 to 7 p.m. Services will be led by the Rev. Derek Starr Redwine at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1250 W. Exchange St., at 11 a.m. on WEDNESDAY, November 19th. Private interment at Chestnut Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Edna C. Berry RN Scholarship Fund in the School of Nursing or the Judge Harold and Jeannette White Scholarship Fund in the School of Law at The University of Akron, c/o Department of Development, University of Akron, Akron, Ohio 44325-2603.
