Edward G. "Papa" Patterson
We celebrate the life and legacy of Edward Glen Patterson, who went home to be with the Lord and his beloved wife in heaven on September 21, 2018.
Edward, known to most as Ed and to many as "Papa", was born on April 26, 1942 in Stow, Ohio, and grew up in Stow and Akron. He graduated from Central High School (now Central-Hower) and married his high school sweetheart Mary Anne (née Reynolds) on September 17, 1961. He served four years in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Enterprise from 1960 to 1964 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He worked for Chrysler for 29 years. In 1993 he suffered an illness that left him in a coma for 55 days. When he came out of his coma, he was a changed man. He dedicated his life to serving God and others and worked in the nursing home ministry for 16 years.
Papa was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Anne. He is survived by their three children, Lisa, Mark (Lourdes) and Aaron (Joanna); grandchildren, Elizabeth, Joseph, Marissa, Jesse, Marianna, Caitlyn, Cecilia and Chloe; and six great-grandchildren.
Papa was a father and grandfather figure to many, and showed the love of Christ to strangers and friends alike. He opened his heart and home to many people. Through the nursing home ministry, he brought the good news of Jesus Christ to residents of care facilities throughout the Akron area. He will always be remembered for his love of God and family, his strong and beautiful singing, and his smile that lit up a room.
Services will be held Friday, September 28 at House of Prayer for All People, 69 Balch Street, Akron, OH 44302. Friends may call from 11:00-1:30PM with a service at 1:30PM with repast to follow for family and friends. Interment will be held Monday at 1:30PM at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.
