Dr. Edward Eddie Kuo-Shein Shen, 71, passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2010.
He was born in 1939 in Xian, China to General Tze Shen and Wen-Yi Chang of Taipei, Taiwan. He immigrated to the U.S. in the 1960's to study at the University of Missouri-Rolla, where he ultimately earned his doctoral degree in Chemical Engineering in 1971. Eddie began his career in the early 1970's at Monsanto Chemical, now Advanced Elastomer Systems, where he co-invented Santoprene. His career spanned nearly 30 years in which time he was granted more than five patents in the area of thermoplastic elastomer synthesis and processing. Following his retirement, Dr. Shen continued to share his expertise and commitment to education by serving abroad as a visiting professor and consultant.
Eddie was an avid self-taught tennis player and was blessed with a great sense of humor. He loved singing karaoke and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Poi Yang; their three daughters, Victoria, Elizabeth, and Debby; five grandchildren; his sisters, Kuo-Jen, Kuo-Chu, and Susan.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Akron, with Rev. Michael Koch officiating.
