Eleanor M. Varner

Eleanor M. Varner, 95, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2011.

She and her twin brother, Edgar Meyer deceased were born in Wheeling Island, West Virginia on October 16th, 1915 to E. Wright Meyer and Eleanor Serrin Meyer. Throughout her life she had many stories to tell about her wonderful childhood living in the middle of the Ohio River. Eleanor married Russel W. Varner of Akron and lived there until soon after his death in 1990. She was an active member of the Christ United Methodist Church, belonging to the Womens' Circle; she was a wonderful friend to many. In 1991 she moved to Kent and resided with her daughter, Janet and granddaughter, Kate until her passing. While in Kent, Eleanor became an Associate member of the U.C.C. Church, enjoying the company of the church groups there. She also was active in The Woman's Club of Kent, The Traveler's Club, and The Garden Club of Kent; and participated in the Akron Hiking Spree over many years; her last major hike was to celebrate her 90th birthday. Eleanor studied dance when younger, and had a beautiful singing voice. Her love for the arts will always be reflected in her family.

She was a strong woman, fiercely independent and will be greatly missed by her daughters, Janet Varner and Barbara Jim Johnson; as well as her granddaughters, Meghan Johnson, Kate Rieppel, Erin Mike Kolonich; and her great-granddaughter, Abigail Kolonich.

There will be no calling hours but a private funeral is planned.
