Elizabeth Ann Burgess nee Bledsoe passed away August 31, 2008 in Hudson, Ohio.

She was born in Tampa, Florida on July 13, 1927 and spent her early years in Tampa, Florida and Bluefield, West Virginia. Liz graduated in 1949 from Duke University with a degree in chemistry and was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. While at Duke, she met her husband, Karl O. Nygaard. The couple came to Akron in 1952 when Karl joined the B.F. Goodrich Company. They made their home in the Akron area where they raised their three sons, Eric, Mark and Kurt and daughter, Lisa.

Liz was an active volunteer for a number of organizations and served in leadership roles for many of them including; Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron Women's Board President, trustee of Family Services of Summit County, trustee of Community Support Services, Women's Committee of the University of Akron, United Way of Summit County Allocation and Planning Committee, Mobile Meals and the Louise Sumner Board. She was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter AU.

She was the recipient of several community service awards including the United Way of Summit County's Distinguished Service Award in 1984, recognized as one of the 80 outstanding community volunteers of United Way of Summit County in 1998, received the Bernard W. Frazier Award for outstanding board leadership and exceptional commitment to Family Services of Summit County in 1992 and the Service to Mankind Award from the Sertoma Club of Akron and the Northeast District of Ohio's Service to Mankind Award in 1992.

A member of the First Congregational Church of Akron for over fifty years, she served in many leadership capacities including; Moderator, Chair of the Board of Trustees, President of the Women's Fellowship, numerous other boards and committees and was a former Sunday School Teacher.

Preceded in death by her parents, Thomas William Bledsoe and Maude Bledsoe Barnes; step-father, John F. Barnes; husbands, Karl O. Nygaard, Anton Vittone and Robert Burgess; granddaughter, Cherish Lloyd; she leaves to mourn her passing her children, Eric Sandy Nygaard of Snellville, Ga., Mark Dawn Nygaard of Jiutepec, Morelos, Mexico, Kurt Cindy Nygaard of Hudson and Lisa LaVallee of Alpharetta, Ga.; grandchildren, Sara, Patrick, Nancy, Meredith and Ike Nygaard, Sam and Angelina Lloyd, Lisa Craig, Priscilla McNally, Francis and Lena Gilligan and Kyle Wolff; great-grandchildren, Kenneth and Rachel Craig, Alan, Kenneth and Shawn Lloyd, Emesy Nygaard and Austin Bennett; step-children, Will Kathy Burgess, John Gloria Burgess, Linda Larry Lacaff, Mary Mike Damon; step-grandchildren as well as many special friends.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. SATURDAY, September 13 at the First Congregational Church of Akron, 292 E. Market St., with Dr. Jay Marshall Groat and Rev. Duane Angel officiating. Private inurnment at Rose Hill Burial Park. There are no calling hours. For those who wish, the family suggests contributions to the Karl O. Nygaard and Elizabeth Ann Nygaard Burgess Memorial Scholarship Fund, The University of Akron, Department of Development, Akron, Ohio 44325-2603 or to your favorite charity.
