Elizabeth ("Liz") Finley King August 31, 1939 – December 16, 2024
Elizabeth ("Liz") Finley King, age 85, of Akron, Ohio, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2024, after courageously battling cancer. Until her final days, Liz retained her lifelong love of reading, devouring books, magazines, and three daily newspapers.
Born on August 31, 1939, in Kansas City, Missouri, Liz was the daughter of Siebert M. and Bertha A. Finley. She graduated from Lakewood High School before attending Allegheny College and later transferring to The Ohio State University, where she earned a degree in Education with an emphasis in English.
Liz began her career as an English teacher at Copley High School, where she inspired a generation of students with her passion for literature and language. She was an active volunteer at the American Arbitration Association for many years. In 1983, she transitioned to a career in public service, becoming the Head of Planning and Economic Development for Summit County. She later held similar roles in private organizations, including her impactful work with University Circle in Cleveland.
For over 35 years, Liz was a committed and active member of the Junior League of Akron, serving as President in 1978. She was also a dedicated supporter of the League of Women Voters. Liz was a tireless advocate for women's rights and underrepresented and marginalized communities. Among her many contributions, she organized a series of events to raise awareness about racial inequalities in voting and the judicial system.
In 1990, Liz found her soulmate, David L. King Jr., and they shared a life of love and joy until his passing in 2015. Their life together was filled with travel, adventure, and unwavering dedication to their grandchildren. Liz's life was a testament to resilience, advocacy, and a boundless generosity of spirit that touched everyone who knew her.
Liz was predeceased by her beloved husband, David L King Jr; her parents, Bertha and Siebert Finley; her brother, Richard Finley; her son, Michael H. deBruin; and her grandsons, Ian King and Walter Finley deBruin.
She is survived by her daughter, Anne deBruin Sample (Michael Sample); her son, David Walter deBruin (Laura deBruin); and her cherished grandchildren: Connor Sample, Sean Sample, Elizabeth deBruin, Jack deBruin, William deBruin and Milena King.
A private Celebration of Life will be scheduled in the future. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the League of Women Voters of Akron Education Fund (https://my.lwv.org/ohio/akron-area/education-fund), supporting their vital mission to empower voters and defend democracy.
Liz's legacy of love, courage, and advocacy will continue inspiring everyone who knew her.
