Elizabeth Betsy Hewes Whitmore nee Phillips passed away on April 26th, 2010.
She is survived by four children, seven grandchildren, five great-grand-children, and her sister, Marylu Jenkins. She was preceded in death in 2002 by her husband, Leonard E. Whitmore.
She was born May 26, 1916 in Medina, Ohio, to Florence Hewes and Oscar B. Phillips. Her life was rich with experiences. Her husband's employment took the family to England in 1952, to Switzerland in 1970, and back to Akron in 1975. She has an extended family in the Akron/Medina area. Her life, and stories about her ancestor H.G. Blake and her family's role in running a station on the Underground Railroad, are told in various Medina historical publications. She graduated from Buchtel High School in Akron, attended Simmons College in Boston for a year, then returned to Akron University and graduated in 1938. She was a member of Delta Gamma and belonged to the Medina Book Club. Her membership in these organizations gave her much enjoyment, companionship, and the intellectual challenge of new ideas.
Memorial contributions in memory of Elizabeth Whitmore can be made to The University of Akron Development Office, Akron, Ohio 44325-6103. At her request, services will be private and she will be buried with her family in Spring Grove Cemetery in Medina, Ohio.
