Emmett P. Monroe, 88, died peacefully on August 24, 2012 surrounded by his wife and family.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a dedicated physician in the Akron community. He touched the lives of many families during his forty years of practice in Cuyahoga Falls. Emmett will be deeply missed by his family, friends and colleagues.
Emmett was born in Lexington, Ky. to Robert and Georgia Monroe. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio and at the age of nineteen joined the Air Force to serve as a B-24 pilot in World War II. He piloted his crew through 35 missions from England. Following the war, he graduated from Ohio State University and married Alice Glenn Bixler. He then received a Masters Degree from California Institute of Technology. He received his MD degree from Ohio State in 1953. He began his medical career in Akron and raised a family of five children in Silver Lake.
Emmett is survived by wife of 65 years, Alice; daughters, Janice McCoy (James), Lisa Friese (Dave), Martha Masciantonio, Joanna Polefrone (Frank); and son, Robert Emmett Monroe. He was the beloved grandfather to Laura Friese, Eric Friese (Julie), Sara Harvey (Rob), Andrea Masciantonio, Andrew Polefrone, Phillip Polefrone, and Nilagia McCoy.
Emmett's career as a family physician in Cuyahoga Falls included many years in solo practice, followed by partnership with Mill Pond Family Physicians. In addition to his medical practice, Emmett served in a number of medical community leadership roles. He was honored with the award of Physician of the Year by the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians in 1988. He was a delegate to local and state medical societies. Early in his career, Emmett led the Sabin for Summit County polio vaccine campaign and promotion of water fluoridation. He was actively engaged in research in the area of osteoporosis. He served in a leadership role with Health America. He attended meetings of the European Society for Medicine of the Whole Person. He was a board member of The Monroe Institute, founded by his brother, Robert Monroe. Throughout his career he has contributed to the education of future physicians.
He was a founder and second president of Silver Lake Country Club and an excellent avid golfer. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Akron. He loved to travel with his family, ski and was an excellent photographer.
Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at the First Congregational Church of Akron, 292 E. Market St., Akron, OH 44308. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at the Billow FALLS Chapel, 1907 23rd. St., Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Tee Programs of Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation, 13941 Van Dyke Rd., Plainfield, IL 60544.
