Eugene “Gene” Moncrief , 91, died peacefully on October 22, 2023. Gene had nearly fifty years of experience as a researcher, businessman and consultant. He spent five years at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory where he performed R&D on the nuclear fuel cycle. He was employed with the Babcock & Wilcox Co. for twenty-three years where he retired as Senior Vice President and group executive for the company’s worldwide nuclear and fossil businesses. For the next twenty years Gene held the position as Chairman of Merrihill Incorporated and was a partner with Inventory Solutions, Inc. From 1978-1985 he was a visiting graduate professor at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. Gene holds a Ph.D in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech University, and he remained a loyal Hokie fan throughout his life.
Gene traveled extensively for both business and pleasure and some of his favorite places were San Francisco, Hong Kong, the UK, and Ferrum, Virginia. He was also a long time member at Firestone Country Club where he spent many days playing golf. Gene should be remembered as a generous man who was a loving husband, father and friend to many. It would bring a smile to his face to honor his memory with a dram of single malt scotch and a good joke.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie, parents, John and Barbara, and his brother, Eddie. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia, son-in-law, Roger Gleghorn; sisters-in-law, Susie, Peggy (Pat), Hazel and Doris; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Virginia Tech scholarship fund and the Alzheimer’s Assoc.
