Evelyn A. Darulis

August 4, 1922 — January 5, 2022

Evelyn A. Darulis, 99, passed away January 5, 2022. She was born August 4, 1922, to Ida and Elton B. Metlin in Todelo, Ohio, but spent almost all of her life in Akron. As a little girl, she would often take the train and spend summers with her mother in Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan. She loved swimming. She enjoyed dancing. As a youth, she developed into a fantastic tap dancer and would recount to the family how much fun it was to do the “jitterbug.”

A graduate of the University of Akron, her entire career was spent in teaching in one form or another. She had many students whom she fondly remembered over the years and with whom she remained in contact. She married her husband, Bill, in 1945, and they spent 55 happy years together prior to his death in 2000. Two children were born – David in 1950 and Mark in 1955.

Most of her married life and after, Evelyn lived in Montrose where she and the family were able to indulge in one of her great passions – the love of horses. It was during this time that she enjoyed her second career, that of a librarian at Woodridge Elementary School, where she worked for many years. She truly had a calling for children of all ages. Throughout her life, Evelyn loved to read, and she read voraciously, especially mysteries. She was a huge fan of the TV show, “Jeopardy” and never missed an episode if she could help it.

She is survived by her two sons, David and Mark; her daughter-in-law, Sarah; her nephew, Joseph DiMascio; and her grandniece, Lisa Sams; along with her faithful cat, “Princess”. She was blessed with her long time neighbors and her caregivers who enabled her to live in her home of 60 years until the end. To all of them, the family is grateful.

There will be no calling hours. However, a funeral service will be held at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Fairlawn, OH 44333 on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 10:00 AM with interment immediately thereafter in Rose Hill Burial Park, next to her husband.

Many thanks are offered to all members of Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center for the compassionate care and concern showed to Evelyn and her family.

Should memorials be desired, please donate to the Bath Twp. Police and Fire Rescue Squad, 3864 W. Bath Rd., Akron, OH 44333 or the Akron – Summit County Public Library System, Mobile Services Division, 60 South High St., Akron, OH 44326.

“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In my Father’s house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you.”
