Flora E. Hoak
"Grandma Flo", as she was affectionately known, passed away peacefully in her sleep January 15 at the age of 94.
Born to Fred and Maud Carpenter in Indianapolis, IN, she and her parents moved to the Akron area during the Great Depression. She graduated from West High and was employed by Akron City Hospital all through World War II. She and William "Bill" Hoak married on Christmas Day and raised five daughters and one son. When time allowed, Flo and Bill enjoyed a spirited game of bridge with friends. Bill was an intimidating bridge bully, but Flo would soothe the atmosphere and "simmer" Bill down so the game could continue. Flo enjoyed being employed outside the home and was considered to be a good business woman.
Upon retirement Flo and Bill built a home in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina where they made numerous friends and became active in their new little community. Bill died in 1993 but Flo stayed in their beloved mountain retreat until returning "home" to Akron eight years ago due to ill health. The past four years she resided and was cared for by the loving, compassionate nursing staff and aides at The Inn at Coal Ridge and Hospice of Medina County.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bill and son-in-law, Johnny Hayes; she leaves: daughters and son-in-laws, Saunie and Bruce Krepp (PA); Sandra Hoak and Walter Nichols (NC); Kate and Calvin Combs (OR); Ann Hayes (NC); Alison and Phil First (OH) and son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Sue Hoak (PA); 15 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place and a private service will be held at a later date. Memorials in her memory may be made to Hospice of Medina County, 5075 Windfall Rd., Medina, OH 44256; Alzheimer's Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter, 70 W. Streetsboro St., Suite 201, Hudson, OH 44236; or to a charity of choice. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel)
