Fred William Smith
Fred William Smith, World War Two veteran, Goodyear Aerospace Corporation Engineer, died May 2, 2014 in Hudson, Ohio. He was 94.
Mr. Smith, born in Brookeville, Jefferson County Pennsylvania, was the youngest of 9 children, 6 of whom survived to adulthood. Mr. Smith's grandfather, John P. Smith of Jefferson County, served under Capt. J.H. Freas in the 105th regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers on the side of the Union Forces and was wounded in the Wilderness Campaign and the Battle of Gettysburg. Fred followed his grandfather's example and served 5 years in the United States Army Air Corps from October 1940 to January 1946 during World War II. He was trained as a radio man and served in the South America of the Atlantic Theater, and in Guam and Okinawa of the Pacific Theater.
After honorable discharge from the Army, Fred attended Kent State University from October 1946 to January 1948. He then trained in electronics prior to gaining employment with Goodyear Aircraft Corporation, Akron, Ohio in April 1950. While attending Kent State University, he met Elsiemae Gombert of 425 E. College Ave., Kent, Ohio. They wed on March 6th 1948 in Kent, Ohio.
Fred and Elsiemae had two children, Leesa Leigh and Kent Lawrence Smith. He worked in Support of defense contracts throughout the 50s and 60s, moving the family to Germany for 3 years, where he was an active member of the Galilei Lodge No. 810A in Kaiserslautern, and Seattle, Washington for one year in the 1960s. His specialty was maintenance and design of guidance systems for aircraft missiles. While in Seattle, he worked on the 737 autopilot as a subcontractor for Boeing Corporation. Fred retired March of 1984 from Goodyear Aerospace Corporation after more than 34 years of service. He worked for Goodyear during retirement and at his hobbies in electronics and woodworking.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife , Elsiemae Gombert Smith of Cuyahoga Falls; son Kent (Brenda) Smith of Baltimore, MD; daughter, Leesa Smith of San Jose, CA; sister, Dorothy M. Faulk of Medina, OH; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. He will inurned at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (
