Dr. Gasto De Carlo left this world unexpectedly and quietly, in his home, in Akron, on the evening of October 6, 2015. He was 86.
He lived a full and exciting life, which began on August 11, 1929, in the small town of Lago, in the region of Calabria, in southern Italy. His parents were the late Maria (DePascale) and Francesco De Carlo. In a small town like Lago, people had to create their own entertainment. For Gasto, it was playing soccer with balls made from old socks and racing through town at midnight on his old, black horse. In 1950 his family moved to Rome and he attended the University of Rome, where he graduated with a degree in medicine. He came to the U.S. in 1957, in search of the "American dream" He married Marilyn Schnitzlein in 1958 and went on to complete an internship in General Medicine and Surgery at The Jamaica Hospital in New York City. They moved to Wadsworth, Ohio in 1964.
Gasto began his practice in Wadsworth and later opened a second office in Akron. In 1972 he built The De Carlo Professional Building on Baker Boulevard in Fairlawn where he practiced until his retirement in 1993. After retirement, he divided his time between Akron, Marco Island and Italy, where he still had close friends and family.
In 1979 he joined the National Guard and then became a flight surgeon in the Air Force National Guard. He retired ten years later, as a Colonel. That was his way of showing his appreciation for all the opportunities America had afforded him.
He was a passionate man, who loved nature and all things connected to it. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and travelled extensively. The world was his playground and life was an adventure. He felt comfortable anywhere he went and made friends everywhere. He was a renaissance man in the true sense of the word. He had a vast knowledge of art, music and history, was an excellent cook, and loved entertaining.
Gasto had a deep love for his family and friends. He was generous and loyal and those that knew him well knew how truly selfless he was.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Dino De Carlo, of Rome, Italy. He is survived by his daughter, Susan and his son, Dr. Francesco (Kelli), and their mother, Marilyn; his grandchildren, Heather (Texas) and Julianna Mozingo and Anthony and Joseph De Carlo, all of Akron; sister, Yvonne (Guiliano) Violetta, their children Veronica and Iacopo; sister-in-law, Rossella De Carlo, her children, Daniella (Francesco) Corso, their children, Ariana, Alici, and Giacomo, GianLuca (Francesca) De Carlo, their son, Francesco, all of Rome, Italy and numerous cousins all in Italy and Pennsylvania.
No calling hours. Private services will be held for the family. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel)
