George A. Janes

March 1, 1931 — September 27, 2021

George passed away Monday September 27, 2021 after a long battle with Dementia. He was born on March 1, 1931 to the late Clara and Eddie Janes in Akron, Ohio.

He lived all of his life in Akron but traveled extensively in his work. He attended the University of Akron where he received his BS degree in Industrial Management and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. While attending the University he was in ROTC and after graduation entered the United States Air Force. He served most of his 4 years (1952-1954) in Biloxi, Mississippi. His fondest memory was his assignment to ride on the float for the Cotton Bowl Parade in his full dress uniform. After leaving the Air Force he returned to Akron and was employed at the Goodrich Company in various management rolls for 17 years. While at Goodrich one of the products he was involved with was testing anti-fouling materials to prevent growth of marine substances on the bottoms of ships. He then purchased the Marine Test Station in Miami, Florida. He expanded his test sites to Half Moon Bay, California and Kauai, Hawaii. He traveled from site to site so when he said he was going to work we were all envious. He was founding member of the Controlled Release Society and served as their Third President. He was also the arrangements chairperson which involved more travels to fun places. He was an avid golfer scoring 2 holes in one – however he holds the Summit County record for broken clubs or clubs thrown into the lake. He was a good golfer but not a patient golfer.

George was a very special person. He was liked by all and he liked everyone. He always had a smile and a quick witty remark. We will miss him.

He leaves his wife of 43 years Dottie Janes (Stiles). His son Mark and his wife Karen and his grandson Matthew. And many friends. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice for their kind and loving care of George during his final days. They were always there when I needed them during this very difficult time.
