George Fathalla Jumbert , 84, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2023, surrounded by his wife, daughters, and son-in-law. His genuine smile and infectious laugh lit up every room he entered.
Georges, nicknamed Gigeot by his parents, was born on December 18, 1938, in Cairo, Egypt. His father was from Aleppo, Syria, and his mother from Chios, Greece. Throughout their humble upbringing in Cairo, George and his younger brother Nabil found refuge in their education. He emigrated to Akron in 1968. Two years later, George met his wife Katherine, and they were married for 52 years. An amazing father to two daughters, Gigeot was also a loyal cousin and a beloved “oncle.” He demonstrated the importance of family and pride in his heritage to his daughters by always calling and visiting his family abroad.
George, a civil engineer, worked three jobs, by day at the City of Akron and at night and on weekends managing “The Jumbert Construction Company” and “Georgie’s Homes.” After his retirement, George designed and built “Georgie’s Plaza,” the home of “Georgie’s Pub and Zoo.” Jovial and generous, Georgie had a passion for connecting with others through his genuine, warm-hearted hospitality and made anyone he met feel like his “very, very, very good friend.”
George was preceded in death by his sister Brigitte, his father Fathalla, his mother Assimina (née Agiorgousis), and his brother Nabil. He leaves behind his loving wife, Katy; his daughters, Angela and Gigi (Evan Stern).
George’s daughters would like to thank the caretakers, past and present, at Memory Care of Vitalia of Montrose for their devoted care of both of their parents. Thank you also to the caretakers at Suncrest Hospice for their care for Dad in his final days.
