Gerald Vance Wootton
Gerald Vance Wootton died June 9, 2009 at the Hospice Care Center.
Known to friends and associates as "Jerry," he was born in 1921 in New Orleans, La., and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from Ohio State University, 1943. In 1944 he volunteered for midshipman's training, U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., was commissioned Ensign E USNR, and served on Destroyer Escort duty in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Far Pacific Areas, until released to inactive duty in 1946. He enjoyed a varied and challenging chemical engineering career, employed by Standard Oil of Louisiana Pipeline Co., DuPont A&A Division, Glyco Products Co., B.F. Goodrich and Goodrich Gulf Chemicals Divisions, covering a range of assignments: R&D, manufacturing, plant engineering, project design, construction, and start-up, customer support, and international technology licensing, most related to original chemistry, new chemicals and polymers, and unique manufacturing processes. He received seven U.S. Patents plus foreign equivalents. Retiring in 1986 from B.F. Goodrich Research, Brecksville, Ohio, he continued as an industry consultant until 1992. He attributed successes achieved in these years to the trust, confidence, and support given him by his superiors, peers and associates, and those he supervised. Herewith in remembrance, he toasts them all in one last farewell.
He was a 50+ year member of the American Chemical Society and Scottish Rite and Charleston WV Lodge 153 Masonic Bodies, Tadmor Shrine, and was a member of Bath Church, United Church of Christ.
Preceded in death by Mary Frances, his wife of 63 years, Jerry is survived by son, Frederic of Maryland; grandson, Christopher of Virginia; son, Jeffery and daughter-in-law, Lois; granddaughters, Tegan and Torey, all of Bath, Ohio; and his brother, Rev. Roger W. Wootton of Malden, Mass.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bath Church, United Church of Christ, with Rev. Mark W. Frey officiating. Interment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
