Geraldine Ruth Wingard nee Jenkins
Geraldine R. Wingard, 82, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2009 from complications due to Alzheimer's.
A lifetime resident of the Akron area, "Jerry" was known as a warm, caring mother, a loving grandmother and friend to many, with clear blue eyes, a quick smile and an infectious laugh. She was often described as a woman with class, someone who was independent, considerate, thoughtful and committed to her family and friends. She leaves behind a deep void and will be missed by all who knew her.
Jerry was married for over 31 years to Thomas H. Johnson, Jr., who passed away in 1977, and with whom she had two children, Jeffrey Bruce and Craig Thomas. She then worked at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Office Services, where she met many friends and her second husband, Robert A. Wingard, whom she was married to until 2002. During those years, Jerry enjoyed her life and the people she knew. She loved walking outdoors, reading, dancing and being around those she loved. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls, VFW #3383 and a volunteer with various organizations including the Hower House. Primarily, though, the family was her focus and her main hobby was being a friend and companion to her kids, her grandchildren and her brothers and sisters. To all of us, she was someone who could be counted on for support, love and care, no matter what.
She is survived by her two children, Jeffrey JoAnne of West Bloomfield, Mich., Craig Sally of Munroe Falls; her grandchildren, Jared Johnson of Chicago, Jason Johnson of Memphis, Jessica Johnson of Rochester, Mich., Elizabeth Johnson of Chicago and Kathryn Johnson of Munroe Falls. She also is survived by her brothers, Frank Shirley Jenkins and Richard Polly Jenkins, both of Tallmadge and her sisters, Bonnie Gene Hodgson of Massillon and Gloria Sonagere of Salem, Ohio, along with many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 10:30 a.m. TUESDAY at the Billow FALLS Chapel, 1907 23rd St., with Rev. Marvin Brown officiating. Interment at Northlawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home MONDAY TODAY from 5 to 8 p.m.
