Harold Carson Blackwood, 86, of Fairlawn, died unexpectedly May 23, 2009.
Harold was born in Akron to Francis S. and Myrtle Blackwood. He served in the U.S. Navy as Plane Captain in the 2nd World War. As co-pilot he flew the S.N.J. Grumman Goose, and amphibian plane. The rough seas of the Aleutian Islands were described as the worst place on the planet to fight a war. For his part in serving his country with courage and honor, he received a signed personal letter from the Secretary of the Navy, James Forestal and one from President Harry S. Truman.
Harold's great grandfather, Isaac Blackwood, fought in the Civil War, died and was buried in Andersonville Cemetery. Their family were early settlers in Ohio. There is still a cabin and the Blackwood bridge in southern Ohio, south of Athens. Harold graduated from Kent State University in 1950. He also attended Oberlin College. He worked for Northeastern Shaped Wire of Connecticut as sales representative of industrial metals for 28 years. He was a 64 year member of the American Legion Post 281 and a Trustee of the Fairlawn VFW Post 349.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Matilda; step-daughter, Karon Stewart; step-son, Andrew Johnson; sister, Doris Dick Brown; brother-in-laws, George Amy Curley, Dave, Wayne Gordon; sister-in-law, Elaine Tom Davenport of W. Palm Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Kristopher, Mark Holly, Maridith, Paul Johnson; great- grandchildren, Aiden, Kaleb Johnson; nephews, Steve, Craig, Mark Brown; niece, Karen Gallaher; and many more nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 12 p.m. Wednesday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Akron with Rev. Fr. Jerry F. Hall officiating. Burial at Rose Hill Burial Park where military rites will be conducted by Copley VFW 7971 and Copley American Legion 473. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with a 7 p.m. Trisagios service. If desired, contributions may be made to the Fairlawn VFW Post 349, 3420 S.
