Harriet Lee Peters, 82, of Bath, went home to be with the Lord on December 22, 2013 at Akron City Hospital after a 20 year battle with Parkinson's. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and friend who will be greatly missed and remembered always for her kind, compassionate, and loving nature.
Harriet was born to Thomas and Katherine Saddler on June 26, 1931 and graduated from North High School in 1949, along with the love of her life, Dick Peters, a fellow North classmate and her grade school sweetheart. She then graduated from the University of Akron in 1952 with a BS in Dietetics, the same year she and Dick married.
Harriet is survived by her husband of 62 years, Richard (Dick) Peters of Bath; her son Chris (Kim) of TN; her daughters Suzanne Peters, and Kathy (Mark) Roberts, both of Bath; her granddaughters, Katie of TN; Sarah (Mitchell) Joyner of NC; Lauren (Savannah) of VA; and Christina and Samantha Roberts of Bath; her great-grandsons, Mason Lee and Garrett Alan Joyner of NC; brother Tom (Jackie) Saddler of ND; nephews Wesley (Cheryl) Peters of IL and Tom Saddler, Jr., of NM; nieces Carol Hernandez of WI, Janet (Steve) Hedtke of WI, Jennifer (Bryan) Phillips of FL; and many cousins, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her sons David and Mark Peters and her parents, Thomas and Katherine Saddler.
A dedicated and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Harriet received the call to teach, becoming a master teacher for 27 years at Hinckley Elementary School in the Highland School District where her students learned more than the ABCs: for Harriet taught others how to live their lives with purpose and enthusiasm; how to show compassion for others; how to become great leaders and successful members of society. She inspired many to follow in her footsteps as teachers, and she definitely made a difference in the lives of all who met her--students and friends alike. After retirement, Dick and Harriet enjoyed traveling and boating, most recently at Lake Gaston, NC, where they enjoyed many summers reuniting with loved ones. In addition to the many organizations that Harriet belonged to, she was an active member of Bath United Church of Christ.
Services for Harriet Peters will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Bath United Church of Christ by the Rev. Mark Frey at 11 a.m.. Visiting hours will be held at the church two hours prior to the funeral. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Harriet L. Peters Memorial Scholarship Fund at any Chase Bank, which will benefit elementary education students at the University of Akron. The family wishes to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff of the Acute Palliative Care Unit at Akron City Hospital for their compassionate care. Private interment will be at Rose Hill Burial Park. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel)
