Harry Donovan has cooked his last dinner for his friends, but we are sure that he is cooking for God and His angels today!
Harry went to heaven on Feb. 8 at the age of 90 due to complications from a fall. Serving his fellow man was what he enjoyed most, starting with OPEN M 49 years ago.
Harry proudly served in the US Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He was involved in seven invasions against the Japanese held islands. In recent years Harry has been working hard to help Veteran groups. He was involved in helping Valor Home get off the ground. He is a member of VFW Post 349 and the Purple Heart Post 699. He was involved with Fisher House and the Cleveland VA Hospital. He recently established a fund for veteran care at Summa. This will help veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Harry was named Veteran of the year in 2012 and inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in 2013.
Harry loved Marco Island and was involved in the development of the island. He made it his home in 1969.
He was a CPA when he retired at the age of 41. He spent three years on Marco Island, when he had a thought. If he had washed cars and worked his way through college and was able to retire at such a young age, couldn't he help others achieve similar results. He opened another CPA firm and besides accounting, also did consulting. He hoped to instill in others his lifestyle of hard work, traveling the world and yet always stopping to help anyone in need.
Harry was a strong advocate of tithing. Through Guidepost he put out a booklet called Need More, Give More. He always practiced what he preached. Thus he helped many charities in our area. In 2015, he was recognized as the Philanthropist of the year.
Harry was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mabel.
He is survived by his wife, Fran; Children, Alan, Harry, Jr. and Debbie Elton (Gary); Five grandchildren, Kelly (John), Jeff (Claire), Michael, Jonathan and Kimberly (Alec); and nine great grandchildren.
